Sea Captain's Aging Villa Restored

Less than three years ago, the Captain Jedediah Hawkins House in Jamesport - derelict from years of neglect - was facing condemnation and a wrecker's ball.

Today, thanks to the efforts of Jeff Hallock, the Jamesport builder who now owns it, the 142-year-old Italianate villa has been reborn - its romantic belvedere and covered balcony, its ornate moldings and oriel windows, its grand porches and curlicue cornice brackets, all of it, every nook and cranny restored to its original splendor.

And now, the 6,000-square-foot show house is really a show house. It opened this week as the first "North Fork Designer Showhouse" - each of its 14 face-lifted rooms and outbuildings decorated by Long Island interior designers and landscape architects. After the show - which benefits Central Suffolk Hospital - closes on Oct. 30, the house will be converted into an inn and restaurant that is expected to open on Valentine's Day. read more...

House Magazine Review article on Serenity Room, featuring Kathleen Bradley

Click to view larger imageThis is a fabulous location. The vineyards offer a beautiful backdrop for the home," says Kathleen Bradley who was inspired by the vineyards and used that inspiration to create this "Peaceful Retreat." Three of the walls have beautiful murals of the vineyards, incorporating the views one will find in this region (painted by Terrance Joyce). This is clearly the focal point. In ancient times, the "life force" was often symbolized as a grapevine.

Representing the star within everyone is the unique star light. Kathleen believes "we just have to slow down and take the time to find this star."

Each of the three windows is encased in silver and has an Austrian crystal hanging from it. This creates a prism effect diffusing wonderful light within the room. The wicker and rattan chaise is perfect, offering a place to relax. Sitting next to the chaise is a 19th century wood stool and a Tibetan signing bowl, which can be used to meditate.

Illuminating the area is a lovely Wisteria lamp, which brings the lavender from the grapes in. The hand carved wooden meditating statue offers a restful, peaceful sound, reminding us of the wonders of nature.
